Choosing the right material for an architectural project is one of the basic level tasks. It requires several considerations of varying factors. An architect must possess a deep knowledge of how to make choices of construction materials. Let us look at some of the many factors that affect the choice of construction material in architecture:-
- Source of materials – The source of the construction material affects the transportation cost. While constructing a project in the extreme south, you cannot afford to order construction material from the extreme north. Sources of materials should mostly be local such that the transportation cost is low.
- Availability – Material must be available while the project is ongoing. Delay in material delivery can lead to delayed delivery of the project. Delays further lead to loss of energy, hold-up costs, and time. Therefore, one should also choose readily available construction material.
- Cost – Construction material should be such that fits well within the budget of the client. Everything should be pre-planned in such a way that from start to end, the mentioned budget covers up the cost of the purchased materials, maintenance cost, disposal cost, etc.
- Transportation Cost – While choosing material, make sure not to choose items from very distant locations. Distant locations increase the transportation cost. Additionally, transportation cost also increases with the weight of the materials. Heavier items cost more than the lighter ones.
- Maintenance and Durability – A good structure is one that is durable and offers longevity. No one invests in a project that lacks strength and maintenance capability. Construction material is the foundation of any project; therefore, good quality construction material is essential for a durable project.
- Resistant to Moisture – Construction material must be kept safe from moisture. Some materials are self-resistant, while others require protection.
- Material Decay – Some construction materials decay quickly, especially when exposed to constant moisture. There are chances of fungal growth and corrosion. One must invest in materials that have high resistance. Additionally, make arrangements for the protection of sensitive materials.
Conclusion
Therefore, the better choices you make, the better is the outcome, and the lesser are the hassles.
